As 2015 comes to an end, we know that this year has been both hectic and highly successful for each of our A+PEL members. We are so very thankful for our growing membership and the continued opportunity to serve as the premier educators’ organization in Louisiana. We at the State Office appreciate all of your efforts and it is our hope that you have a wonderful and joyous holiday break.
School Report Cards Released
The LDOE released 2014-2015 School Report Cards today! They can be fully searched here: http://www.louisianabelieves.com/data/reportcards/2015/ This year there 10 districts receiving an A rating, 30 receiving a B, 21 earning a C, 9 receiving a D, and 2 Fs. The LDOE also released a set of Parent Guides to School Report Cards designed to support parents’ understanding of strengths and weaknesses in the schools and school districts their children attend. Volunteer of the Year Nominations Open!
The annual A+PEL School Volunteer Awards Program is designed to recognize the many valuable contributions made by Louisiana school volunteers. Additionally, the program is intended to increase awareness of the importance of parental and citizen involvement in Louisiana’s education. The required online forms can be found here. Deadline is February 1st!
Cathy Smith Named Louisiana Counselor of the Year
Long time A+PEL Member Cathy Smith has been chosen as the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) Counselor of the Year in the state of Louisiana. The Counselor of the Year program, established by ASCA, honors the professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates for the nation’s students, helping them to achieve success in school and life. Cathy is the counselor at Elton High School in Jefferson Davis Parish. Please join us in congratulating Cathy!
Our State School Board
On December second and third, the current BESE Board met for the last time. During this last meeting the Board received a report regarding the Teacher Exit Interview System and a report about certifying teacher shortages in critical shortage areas. Several charter school contracts were considered, including Type 2 and Type 5 schools. Teach for America was awarded a statewide contract and 371 schools received nonpublic school academic classification. Changes to the The Louisiana School, District, and State Accountability System were approved, as were Revisions to Bulletin 741, Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators, regarding postsecondary planning for graduating high school seniors. Exploring our Natural World
Do you have students that are interested in depicting the natural world in either artwork or language arts? The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Environmental Education Section is hosting Louisiana’s 14th Environmental Awareness Student Art & Language Arts Contest. Contestants are split into four groups according to age: 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, 14-18. Submissions must be postmarked by Friday, April 22, 2016.
