It has been a very happy, very busy New Year here at A+PEL. We hope you and your students ended 2015 with a bang, and 2016 has swung into full gear. Read about what we have been up to thus far in 2016 and what we have scheduled in the near future. Thank you for allowing us to continue supporting you, the hardest workers in the State of Louisiana!

 

Get your Volunteer of the Year Nominations In!

The annual A+PEL School Volunteer Awards Program is designed to recognize the many valuable contributions made by Louisiana school volunteers. Additionally, the program is intended to increase awareness of the importance of parental and citizen involvement in Louisiana’s education. The required online forms can be found here. Deadline is February 1st!

 

Scholarship and Grant Application Deadlines Coming Up!

A+PEL is proud to offer several Scholarships and Grants to Louisiana’s educators. On Monday, February 15 the following applications are due:

  • Professional Development Grant (up to $500 in order to attend an external professional development seminar or conference)

On Tuesday, March 15, the following applications are due:

  • Debra Nelson/Polly Broussard Scholarship (up to $500 for student teachers)

Larry Bell's "Closing the Achievement Gap" Seminar

Did you enjoy Larry Bell's presentation at our 2015 Summer Conference?If so, this is the seminar for you! Larry Bell will be presenting on February 1-2, 2016 at the Doubletree New Orleans Airport Hotel.Check out more informationhere.

 

Free Educator All Star Conference

Stand for Children Louisiana is hosting their annual Free Educator All Star conference in Lafayette on March 12 from 8:30-3pm at the Lite Center. Participants will hear from local, state, and national leaders in the areas of teacher preparation/ evaluation/mentoring, early childhood education, and educator advocacy.

 

There will also be a special session on strategies to obtain ahighly effective rating on the Danielson Rubric. Louisiana Department of Education leaders, key state legislators and BESE members will be on hand to present and answer policy questions. LEF 2016 Teacher Awards Finalists Announced

Congratulations go out to Charlie West on being named a Finalist for the 2016 LEF Elementary School Award. Mr. West teaches Fourth Grade at Katharine Drexel Elementary School and has been an A+PEL member for over 15 years! Please join us in celebrating Mr. West for his hard work and dedication!

 

Get Carried Away with Education!

The 2016 A+PEL Summer Conference will be held July 12-14 at the Crowne Plaza in Baton Rouge. The title of this year'sconference is Carried Away with Education. Teacher and Principal of the Year Applications

Applications for Teacher and Principal of the Year are due Friday, January 29th. Guides can be found here. Questions? Email ExcellentEducators@la.gov. Also, this year there will be a new teacher recognition award, the H. Norman Saurage III Service Award. A+PEL is looking for teachers that go above and beyond the call of duty. If you have a story about a service project that you lead as a teacher please email us your story.

 

2016 Young Heroes

We hope that you will consider nominating a deserving student for the 2016 Louisiana Young Heroes Awards! It’s sponsored by Louisiana Public Broadcasting. More information, including nomination forms (due Monday, February 1st!), can be found here.

 

Upcoming Events and Deadlines

January 27 (Wednesday)- Data! Data! Data! Free Professional Development Presented at EBR Main Branch Library on Goodwood Blvd. Snacks at 4pm, followed by the workshop from 4:30-6:30pm. Bring your winter benchmark, PARCC practice data, or formative/summative classroom assessments in order to analyze student results. More info here.

 

January 29 (Friday)- Louisiana Principal and Teacher of the Year nominations due!

 

February 1 (Monday)-2016 Louisiana Young Heroes Applications due!

 

February 1 (Monday)- Volunteer of the Year Nominations Due!

 

February 15 (Monday)- Deadline for Professional Development Grant Applications

 

February 17 (Wednesday)-Make and Take Tech Series: Fall in LOVE with Google Forms presented at the Broadmoor Branch Library in Shreveport. Have you ever wondered how to lighten that load of papers you bring home at night and on the weekends? This workshop is for you! Learn how to transform your classroom with this FREE workshop! February 25 (Thursday)- LSU A+PEL Chapter meeting- Hands-On Classroom Management. Meeting starts at 6:30 pm in 225 Peabody. Food will be served!

 

March 15 (Tuesday)- Deadline for Deborah Nelson/Polly Broussard Scholarship Applications

 

March 17 (Thursday)- LSU A+PEL Chapter meeting- Classroom Tech Tools. Meeting starts at 6:30 pm in 225 Peabody. Food will be served!
